Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 30, 2026
This policy covers areacheck.co (the "Website") and the AreaCheck — Travel Safety Assistant browser extension (the "Extension"), together "AreaCheck". AreaCheck shows a neighbourhood safety score and local safety news for hotel, Airbnb, and map listings you're viewing, so you can check an area before you book.
What data we collect
| Data | Source | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Listing / place location text (e.g. property name, address, city extracted from the page you're viewing) | The Extension reads page content on supported sites (Airbnb, Booking.com, Vrbo, Hotels.com, Tripadvisor, Agoda, Expedia, Google Maps, Google Travel) to identify what listing you're looking at | Sent to our API to generate a safety report for that place |
| Search queries typed on the Website | The search box on areacheck.co | Sent to our API to generate a safety report |
| Your extension preferences (custom API host, selected AI provider) | Extension settings panel | Stored locally in your browser (chrome.storage.local) so your settings persist |
| Cached safety reports | Generated by our API | Stored locally in your browser for 12 hours, and on our server for 24 hours, to avoid repeat lookups |
| Basic event logs (query text, AI provider/model used, resulting score, error messages) | Our API, on every search | Debugging and understanding aggregate usage (e.g. which areas are searched most) |
We do not collect your name, email address, precise or coarse GPS
location, payment details, health information, authentication credentials, or the content of your private
messages. The Extension does not request the geolocation permission — location data comes only
from the public listing text on the page you're viewing, never from your device.
How data is processed
When AreaCheck generates a safety report, the location text is sent to our backend
(areacheck.co/api), which:
- Passes the query to one of our AI providers — Anthropic, Google Gemini, or Groq — to produce the safety report, along with recent public news headlines about the area
- Caches the resulting report in Upstash Redis for 24 hours, keyed only by the searched location text
- Logs the event (query text, provider, score, or error) to Supabase for debugging and aggregate analytics
These providers act as our data processors and only receive the location/search text needed to generate your report — never your browsing history as a whole, your identity, or any data unrelated to the specific lookup.
What we don't do
- We do not sell or rent your data to third parties.
- We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, or unrelated purposes.
- We do not use your data to determine creditworthiness or for lending.
- We do not track your browsing activity outside of the specific page you invoke AreaCheck on.
Data retention
Cached reports expire automatically after 24 hours (server) or 12 hours (your browser). Event logs used for analytics/debugging are retained in Supabase; you can request deletion at any time (see Contact below).
Your choices
- Uninstalling the Extension removes all locally stored preferences and cached reports immediately.
- You can clear cached data any time via your browser's extension storage settings or
chrome://extensions. - You can point the Extension at your own self-hosted backend via the settings panel, in which case none of your data reaches areacheck.co.
Children's privacy
AreaCheck is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as AreaCheck evolves. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date above.
